Friday 23rd June

This week we all enjoyed our super sports day.  Have a look at our photos below.

In English we have been learning to write explanation texts. As our topic is Waterworld this term we started by looking at a book about the life cycle of a frog. We looked for features of this type of non-fiction book and we wrote sentences about some of the interesting facts we discovered.
After that we drew diagrams about the four stages of a frog’s life cycle. We then added captions and labels explain the pictures. Finally we wrote interesting and informative facts about each of these stages, remembering to use our ‘non-negotiables’.  Please ask your child to tell you some interesting facts that they remember.

This week in maths we revisited our learning about multiplication. We reminded ourselves of the vocabulary linked to multiplication including; multiply, repeated addition, lots of,  groups of, multiply and times by.
We used our knowledge of counting in 2s 10s and 5s to solve simple word problems.
Here are some examples.

In our next lesson we used our knowledge of multiplication and applied it to solve money problems involving using 2ps, 10ps, 5ps, 20ps and 50ps.
Here are some examples.

I have got 4 coins in my purse.
The total 40p

What coins do I have?

Looking at the coins.  Which coin do I need 4 of to make 40p.
2ps 5ps 10ps 20ps?

I have got 60p in my purse?
What coins could I have?
Find 2 ways.

In year one we are experts in counting in 2s 10s and 5s. Help your child keep practising at home over the summer. You may like to ask your child to work out how many 2s in 16, 10s in 50, 5s in 25?

Last week in science we chose a sea creature we had seen at Southend to research using DK Find Out.  Follow the link to find out more.

We had to find out the creature habitat, diet, key features and an interesting fact. This week we used that research to make our own Top Trump card.

Have a great weekend.
