Friday 19th January 2018

This week in English we have been using our learning about space to write sentences. First we looked at some pictures and thought what we could write about them. We shared our ideas with our learning partners and as a class so we could ‘magpie’ ideas from each other. We then co-constructed success criteria for ourselves. We particularly tried hard to hold our pencils correctly and form our letters properly. Please ask your child what we have to remember when we are writing sentences. The next day we pretended we were teachers and we marked our work! We worked with a partner and checked to see if we had included everything from the success criteria in our work. We used a green pencil make any changes needed. We then choose another picture and tried to make it even better than our previous work!
We have also enjoyed an English space chil. We wrote our favourite space facts on alien pictures for our display, we coloured in space pictures and we tackled some reading comprehension.  During this time we also discussed our writing with our teachers, looking at what we had done really well and what our next steps in writing are. Please ask your child if they can remember!

This week in maths we have been using our number bonds to 10 to find number bonds to 20.
The children need to know their number bonds to 10 to be able make the connection that these can be used to find number bonds to 20.  Follow the link to Hit the Button making 10, once they are secure with this move on to making 20. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

During the week we used different manipulatives including Numicon and tens frames to help the children see that when we can use a number bond to 10 to make a number bond to 20.  The ones will stay the same but you have to add a 10 to one of the numbers eg  8+2 could become 18+2 or 12+8.

On Wednesday we did a maths investigation.  We had to find pairs of numbers that total 20.  Some of us choose to record as we thought of the number bonds eg
10+10
15+5
18+2
16+4………..
whilst others tried to record in a logical system just like a real mathematician eg
0+20
1+ 19
2+18
3+17
4+16…..
We found out there were 21 ways and decided it was easier to check if you use a logical system.  We also noticed a pattern occurring.  Ask your child if they can see it.

On Friday we began to learn about bridging through 10 to help us when adding.
Follow the link to play the game to help your child understand this concept.
In science this week we had to help Professor Penny Planet do an experiment with asteroids.  First we investigated and then we asked our own questions that we could find the answer to.

Here are some of our questions
Does the biggest asteroid make the biggest crater?
Does the smallest asteroid make the smallest crater?
Which asteroid makes the loudest sound when it crashes?
Which asteroid makes the deepest crater?
Ask your child what they found out.

We have had lots of fun in computing this week! We used a ‘space map’ and programmed the rockets (Beebots) to travel to different planets. Have a look at the photos to see how engaging this was.

Today we have been practising making the mechanisms for our space pictures. We have learnt how to make sliders, spinners, flaps and concertina springs.

This week in phonics we have been learning to blend, segment read and write words containing the digraphs 'ee' and and the alternative spelling for this phoneme 'ea'.

We hope that you have a good weekend,

The Year One Team
