This week in maths we have been learning about place value in
numbers to 50. We started the week by playing the ‘Snail Game to help us think
about how 2-digit numerals are formed from tens and ones. We rolled dice and
counted out that number of bricks. When we have 10 bricks we exchanged the ten
bricks for one ten stick. Here is the game so you can play it at home. When
talking about numbers please ask your child ‘How many tens? How many ones?’’.
The next day wrote numerals as ‘sticks and bricks’, and ‘sticks
and bricks’ as numerals. Again, we kept thinking ‘How many tens? How many ones?’
Here are some examples:
We have also being playing ‘Lions and Tigers’. We rolled dice and used a tens and one frame to choose the number. We then marked that number on a one hundred square. We played with a partner and we tried to be the first person to make a number on each row. Here is the game so you can play at home.
We have been making numbers to 50 using a variety of resources.
We used Numicon, bead strings, tens frames, sticks and bricks or anything else
we could think of! Here are some examples:
As you can tell, reading and making 2-digt numbers has been a
feature this week! Please can you practise using two numerals to make two,
2-digit numbers and dis cuss the ten and ones in each. Please also continue to
practise counting forwards and backwards to 50, starting at any number. Crossing
the ‘tens’ number is particularly helpful!

This week in English
we began the week by gathering ideas for a class Naughty Bus story. We used the plot matrix to help us
plan.
By the end of the
lesson we had created a class story. The setting for the Woodpeckers’ Naughty
Bus story was the Southend seaside and Kingfishers’ setting was a farm.
On Tuesday we worked
together in our colour groups to write a story using the ideas we gathered
yesterday. The adults scribed for us and we worked together as a group. Ask
your child where their groups story was set.
On Wednesday we
performed our stories to each other. After hearing each story we talked about what we liked about the story. We identified the setting, the problem, the helper and finally the solution in each story.
On Friday we planned
our own Naughty Bus story using a boxing up sheet. We drew simple pictures like a story map to remind us of the setting, the characters and the key moments. We could magpie any of the ideas we had
gathered during the week.
Next week we will be writing our own stories so you may like to talk to your child about the story they are going to write.

How can you support
your child in their writing?
Read. Read. Read and
read! Read plenty of vehicle stories to give children ideas for their own
writing. You need ideas to magpie to write your own stories.
Make up your own
stories verbally. Enjoy storytelling!
Use these sentence
starters to start a sentence
Once…… One day……. Soon…. Next….. Just then…. Luckily…
From that day on….
This week in D&T we assembled our vehicles. We attached our wheels to the axles and then attached them to the chassis. After that the body of our vehicle was attached to the chassis using a glue gun.
Look at the amazing vehicles we have designed and made over the last few weeks!
Today we have enjoyed a visit from Mr Sutton and his vintage Austin 7 Ulster.
Ask your child what they saw and what they learnt.
Have a great weekend
