In English we have been looking at the characters and the rhyming language of the story. On Monday we read the book and had an English CHIL session where we explored a range of activities linked to the story. We matched captions to characters, found the missing letters in some of the words and shared ideas around the sequence of the story.
Across the week we have been delving into aspects of the story and then using it to explore a range of concepts and activities including designing and labelling an alternative broom, writing a spell, and matching sentences from the story to the corresponding pictures. The children have been exploring and developing rhyming words and using these to re tell the story.
In maths this week we have been problem solving and counting.
On Monday we looked at the characters from the story and discussed the order they arrive on the broom.
We used mathematical language to discuss the order and then tried to find as many possibilities as we could for the order the characters could sit on the broom.
On Tuesday we enjoyed activities in our Maths CHIL including a witch's hat number bonds game, activity sheets based around simple addition and subtraction and sequencing numbers and counting them in order to find a total.
On Wednesday we found an exciting, magical spell book that had been damaged by mud! Fortunately the teachers were able to photocopy some pages for the children so they could make their own potions. It was very important to count the objects the potion required accurately as we didn't want any magical mishaps! The children worked in teams to find and count their ingredients from their spell list and then use their counting skills to make sure they had the right number of each object in order to complete the spell successfully.
Finally on Friday the children were solving problems to do with numbers. Ask your child how many different possibilities/combinations they can find for these problems:
It had 6 googly eyes.
From out of the ditch
rose a horrible scene.
It had 10 flappy wings.
Which
animals could it have been?
From out of the ditch

It had 8 fluffy ears.

This week we looked at our school area in our geography lessons and have discussed the features that were natural or man made around our site. The children have been looking at aerial images and maps of the local area to learn about how to draw and describe local features and landmarks. The children were shown how to draw a map from a birds eye view above and create a key to explain their symbols they had drawn onto their maps.
We introduced the idea of a compass to help us locate directions on a map to help us find our way and then played a game where we had to move to areas of the room base on the compass direction given.
Alongside this we have been continuing to work on our handwriting, phonics and have enjoyed a range of lessons and activities including PE, Music and friendship time.
Further ideas for home learning:
Read the story of room on the broom and finding the rhyming words together. Can you think of other words that might sound the same?
Find your own outdoor ingredients to make a simple spell including pinecones, acorns leaves and twigs. Count them into your potion and discuss how many of each you have. What was the most number of objects and what was the least.
Next week in English the children will be continuing their learning about Jack and the Beanstalk that we started before book week. In maths we will be counting and ordering numbers and objects.
At home you might like to continue asking your child to tell you everything they know about different numbers up to 10 e.g.
Tell me everything you know about 7
It is odd
5+2
10 - 3
4 +3 and so on.
Have a great weekend.
