In Maths this week we have been exploring the concept of place value within 50. We have been examining how each number is made up and how many sets of tens and how many ones create each number.
On Tuesday we used resources to build our numbers including bead strings and diennes and discussed the place value position of the tens and ones to show the numbers. The children in pairs had to decide which type of diennes to use, either sticks or cubes and place them correctly on the place value chart.
On Wednesday we used our knowledge from the last lesson to draw and discuss the place value of each number and played a dice rolling game to generate and place numbers correctly to show the tens and ones on our place value chart.
Friday saw us enjoying two Maths lessons in the morning. In the first we played some dice rolling place value games where we had to score the highest number and identify the tens and ones in each one and a snail race game to 100.
Our second lesson helped us to recap the concepts learnt across the week and choose the best resources to help us build and draw our maths pots calculations and evidence our understanding in our books.
We explored mathematical language and then ideas of methods and strategies we could use to support our learning. The children have been playing games around the concept of placing the tens and ones in the correct column using a dice to generate the two digit number. If you feel like a five minute fun maths game then ask your child to play with you at home. you need two dice and a piece of paper to make two columns, one for the tens and one for the ones. Take turns to roll the dice and then decide where to place your number either in the tens column or the ones column. repeat for a second roll and place that number in the column you haven't filled. The person with the largest number after two roll of the dice wins... great fun and good for place value practice.
This week in English the children wrote a recount of their experience with Ark Farm last Friday.
We started by ordering pictures, discussing time openers and making a verbal plan for their writing.
Ask your child to tell you as many time openers as they can think of.
(First, Next, Then, After that, Later, Soon, Eventually, Finally).
Ask your child why a time opener always starts with a capital letter.
Next the children wrote their recount. The children focused on using a range of time openers in their writing. Some children chose to extend their sentences using the joining words and, but, so, if and because.
Next week in English we will be doing lots of work on the story Percy the Park Keeper - After the Storm. You might like to read some Percy the Park Keeper stories with your child at home over the weekend. Try to spot some interesting descriptive words and discuss why you like these words.
In Art this week we have been looking at animal prints The children used viewfinders to focus in on a small part of the print and then they recreated the print using pencils and pastels. You might like to try the same activity at home with your child.
In computing this week we have been designing and drawing animals that have paws, claws and whiskers and then using these designs to replicate them on the computer using our painting application 2 simple. The children used our research books to gather facts about their chosen animal and wrote this onto their sheet.
We went to the ICT room and took turns to use the computers to create our finished designs before sharing them with each other and giving positive feedback about them.
