Friday 2nd October 2020

Welcome to week four.

We have had another busy week this week and even the cold and wet weather hasn't stopped Year 1 from exploring a range of subjects both in and outside the classroom.

In English this week we have explored labelling items and how labels give us information about what objects are called. The children were given stick it notes and had to explore the labels in our classroom and then copy or write their own using our say the word, finger the word, write the word three- step system. Children were then asked to match a range of labels to the correct picture in their books.

During the rest of the week we re-visited our Jack and the Beanstalk story and looked at the narrative of the text. We discussed the key events and shared the sequence of the story, exploring the order in which things happen. As a class we created a story map using our 'bubble' story sheet and then used it to act out the main parts of the traditional tale. Children were then asked to create their own story map using drawings to represent the key stages of the tale. We ended the week with a CHIL session based around Jack and the Beanstalk, exploring a range of creative drawing and writing activity stations.

Maths this week saw us looking at number sequencing and finding the missing numbers on a number track. We looked at the idea of using 0 as a place saver to represent our numbers such as 10, 20, 30 and so on. The children discussed the concept of place value and we looked at numbers to see how they were made. We observed and recorded the number of tens and ones in each number and then observed numbers in a sequence on the number tracks. The children were then given challenges of finding the missing numbers in a sequence and representing them in a range of ways including pictures, number words and numerals.

To end the maths sessions we had a CHIL where children were able to visit different stations and practise the skills they had learnt across the week.

Geography lessons this week were focused around the concepts of physical and human features and the idea of seeing the landscape from an above view looking down. The children viewed some aerial photographs and identified a range of natural and man-made features and then discussed ideas on how the scenery looked different when photographed from above.

Computing lessons this week saw us training our fingers for the mousepad control needed when using a laptop. We used ping-pong balls to make shapes and letters on the tables to manipulate the ball in readiness for our laptop use and curser control. We learnt how to move our curser arrow and find the search bar to select the word program and then maximise and minimise the screen before logging off.

Phonics this week has been based around the digraphs 'ar', 'ur' and 'ng'

We have been finding the sounds in a range of words and using our phoneme fingers to support our ability to segment and blend words. We made silly sentences and then located the position of the key sounds in each word.

On Friday we enjoyed an extra activity for the reading is magical. We read the story Julian is a mermaid by Jessica Love and enjoyed exploring a range of activities around identity and being who we want to be. We decorated mermaid tails and drew pictures of our own reflection in dress up of our choice.

Activities to try at home based on our learning this week include: Using household objects to make groups of numbers that add up to ten. Perhaps finding six spoons and four cups to make ten items and then seeing how many different ways we can make ten.

Drawing a cartoon strip of Jack and the beanstalk and then writing a different ending to the one in the original story.

Making a list or drawing of something that people in our family feel proud about and discussing how that makes us feel.

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week.
