This week in English we have been concentrating on forming our
letters correctly and using full stops and capital letters. Letter formation
can be arranged into ‘families’ as the formation of these letters all start in
the same way. These are the families:
Curly caterpillar letters – all start with a ‘c’ shape, although f, e and s are a bit speacial
Ladder letters – all start with a ‘l’ shape, starting at
the top of the letter
One armed robot letters – all start with a ‘r’ shape, that is a
vertical down, up and over
Zig-zag letters - made with diagonal straight lines

We are sending home handwriting ‘families’ sheets and some
letter formation sheets today. During half term please help your child to
practice forming all of their letters correctly. If you are going on holiday
maybe they could send a post card to school?!
We practised our letter formation by writing words, making sure
we remembered what to do when we write a word, ‘Say the word, finger the word,
write the word’. Please encourage your child to use this method during half
term.
We then read some of Lullabyhullaballo but found it very
confusing – because it did not have any capital letters or full stops!
We then used a ‘teachers’ green pen’ and added capital letters
and full stops, remembering to always use a capital letter at the start of each
sentence and for the name of a person or place. We checked that we had put all
the capital letters in the correct places by reading the sentences and checking
that they now made sense!
Finally we put all of our learning together and wrote simple
sentences about pictures. Here are some examples of our work – look at our
super letter formation and punctuation.
We started the week looking at the whole, part, part model.
If 5 is the whole?
Can we partition the 5 into two parts?
We talked about which numbers could be the parts?
Here are some of our ideas.

We then worked practically in pairs using the whole
part model. We were given the whole and had to use counters to
partition the whole into parts. Our teacher asked us to identify
which numbers were the parts and which the whole. At the end of the lesson we
were asked if you could partition the whole into 3 parts.
You may like to partition the whole 5 into three
parts at home.
On Tuesday we used the whole part models again this
time recording on mini worksheets.

Ask your child whether a part or the whole is
bigger.
We began by using counters and then went on to use
numbers. Some of us challenged ourselves to find different ways of making the
whole.
On Wednesday we looked at the + and = symbols for
the first time in Year 1. We looked at some images and had to say
the number sentence it represented. We kept the first number in our
head and counted on the second number to find the total. We then wrote our own number sentences using
the + and = symbols.
Can you child make up a number sentence to go with
these images?
On Friday we worked out the missing numbers using the part whole model.
Over half term your child may like to practise
their number formation from 0-9. Remind
them that all numbers start from the top.
They may also like to practise their number facts
within 10 using the game Hit the Button.

your child feel more confident in their maths lessons at school.
In Woodland
Learning this half term we have been looking at patterns. We started with a gentle session, reminding
the children of the safety rules. In
other sessions we have looked at the difference between natural and man-made
patterns, and in the last couple of weeks we have been creating Rangoli
patterns as part of our Diwali themed activities.
With winter
fast approaching, please can we remind you that your child needs warm, dry
clothing every Thursday (including wellies), as we will be going outside
whatever the weather. If you are having a
sort out in the half term, we’d really appreciate any large socks and tights
(to fit over the wellies) and also any conkers (our stocks have run out).
We have finished our carriages this week – don’t they look splendid!
So we have come to the
end of a very busy and long half term! We hope you have a very happy and relaxing
holiday and we look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready for the start of the exciting
Christmas half term on Monday 30th November. Christmas play costume
letters will be coming out soon!
