This week we have been authors and
written our own versions ‘The Black and White Club’. First we shared ideas
about what we could change in the story and recorded them on a story grid. Please encourage your child to make up stories
using a 9x9 grid to help.
Then we worked with a partner and ‘talked’
our story, checking that it all made sense and that every sentence was
interesting. The next day we made our success criteria, ask your child what an
author has to remember when they are writing a story. We then spent two days
writing our story, checking that we had included all things we needed.
In maths this week we have been continued
learning about measurement. We have
been comparing and measuring the weight of objects. We have been using the vocabulary
associated with weight – heavy/light,
heavier than, lighter than, heaviest and lightest. We used our hands to compare the weight of
objects. Next we put them in order from lightest to heaviest and then we used
scales to check.
Ask your child to explain
using the words above what the scales show?
On Tuesday we used multi-link as a non-standard
unit to compare how much each animal weighed.
First we made a prediction of how many cubes the animal would weigh,
next we weighed it and then we recorded our findings. After that we had to say which animal was
heaviest and which was lightest. We
then found the difference between the number of cubes that the heaviest
animal weighed to that of the lightest.

You
may like to do this at home. Find
between two and five objects and compare which is the heavy, heavier and
heaviest. Can your child put the
objects in order from lightest to heaviest.
On Wednesday we began learning about capacity.
We compared then ordered the volumes of different containers using the words
full/empty, more than, less than, half, half full, quarter full and three
quarters full. We then made our own more and less sentences to compare the
different volumes using the more > and less < symbols.

home with a variety of containers and a variety of fillings including liquids
or solids such as rice or pasta.
Ask your child these questions.
You may like to set up this problem at home
and try to solve it.
On Friday we measured the volume of liquid in
three different containers using a yogurt pot as the unit of
measurement. We had to compare the
containers saying which container held the most and which the least. We then
ordered the containers from smallest to largest capacity. First we made a prediction
of how many yogurt potfuls our container would hold, next we measured to find
out and then we recorded our findings.
In science this week we did an experiment to find the
best waterproof material. We tested a
range of different materials and then recorded our findings like real
scientists.
Today we have enjoyed a dance
workshopto inspire us as part of Sports Relief. We welcomed Thom, a ballet dancer, who showed us that both boys and girls can do ballet and dance.
Thom reminded us all that it is Sport Relief today and the children have been watching and dancing to the Sport Relief 2018 song. We have talked to the children about how everyone is not as fortunate as us and that it is a very worthwhile cause. Please make a donation if you can.
