This week we have had our first maths lessons.
|
We
started the week by sorting. We thought of lots of different ways to sort
ourselves. Here are a few of our ideas:
5 year olds, 6 year olds, children who like the colour green, children who
don’t like the colour green, boys, girls. Next we sorted different objects and
talked about how we had sorted them.
For
the rest of the week we have been working with numbers to 10. We have been counting up and down to 10 from
any number and showing the corresponding number of fingers. We have been trying
to start with our left little finger, to correspond to the number line. This
really helps children to add and subtract effectively. Help your child practise at home.
We
practised counting accurately and talked about how important careful counting
is. We counted on our own and in pairs and had to check each other were
accurate. In Year 1 we don’t like sloppy counting! Look at all the things we
have counted this week.
We
also counted and represented numbers in different ways. By doing this we
understand how 3 can be represented as a group of objects, by a picture, by the
numeral, by the word and it can be show using Numicon, on a number line or 100
square.
Home learning ideas
You
may like to provide opportunities for your child to
·
Sort things at home into groups
·
Count forwards and backwards from 0 -10 using their counting
fingers
·
Practise careful counting up to 10 objects, repeat to check
accuracy
·
Find ways of representing numbers in different ways. Your child may like to bring in a photo to
show how they represented the number 7 at home and they can share it with the
rest of the class.
This week in English we
have been practising holding our pencils correctly and trying to form letters
in each of the handwriting families correctly. First we danced to ‘Baby Shark’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqZsoesa55w)
and then used our ‘Baby Shark’ fingers to hold our pencils! Whilst holding our
pencils we used the other three fingers to ‘wave’, and then put them all under
the pencil to make a ‘cushion’ for it. Please ask your child to demonstrate as
this is difficult to explain!
We then used our correct
pencil grip to form letters in each of the ‘families’. This means that each of
the letters in the group start with the same formation and this helps children
form all the letters correctly. The handwriting families are:
Curly Caterpillar Letters
– start by making a ‘c’ (a, d, g, q, o, s and e)
Long Ladder Letters –
start with a vertical downwards stroke (l, I, j, y, u, k, b, t and f)
One-Armed Robot Letters –
start at the top and make an ‘r’ (n, m, h, p,
Zig-Zag Letters – the ones with straight lines (z, x, v, w)
After practising in our
books we went into the playground and drew letters using chalk.
The next day we used our
learning about pencil grip and letter formation to write labels for our new
folders. We tried really hard to form all our letters correctly as we want
people to be able to read our writing!
On Thursday we used our
reading skills are we searched the school looking for labels on things. We know
that when we read a word we:
‘Look at the letters,
says the sounds and blend them all together.’
Please remind your child
to do this when they read an unfamiliar word. We then used our phonics to write
labels to stick around the school! We tried to hold our pencils correctly and
form the letters correctly. We also remembered that when we write a word we:
‘Say the word, finger the
word, write the word’.
Again, if your child is
writing at home please encourage them to do this.
