In English we have been writing a recount of our toy workshop from last week. First we put some photos from the day in chronological order. Then we talked about what had happened at different times of the day. We realised that using time words helped us sequence the story and make it sound more interesting.
Then we wrote our own recount. We tried to remember:
In maths this week we have been revisiting our learning about taking away. We talked about the vocabulary of subtraction – take away, subtract, less, minus, count back and drew the symbol for subtractions.
We
used counters to practise taking away. We noticed that in subtraction you
always start with the biggest number (the whole) and then take away one of the
parts, which leaves the other part. The
only time the whole isn’t the biggest number is when you subtract 0.
Then we wrote our own recount. We tried to remember:
- Capital letters
- Finger spaces
- Full stops
- Neat handwriting, with correctly formed letters
- Use phoneme fingers to help with spelling
- Check every sentence makes sense
As it was a recount we remembered to use time words. During the weekend please ask your child to use time words and recount something they have done.

We then looked at some subtractions stories. Here is one.
7 – 3 = 4
Use the words First……. Then…… Now….. and draw a picture to represent the calculation.
Your child may like to share their subtraction stories with their class.
We then worked in pairs with 10 counters on a tens frame. We had to throw a dice and then take that number away from 10. We recorded using the – and = symbols.
10 - 4 = 6
6 - 2 = 4
4 - 3 = 1
1 - 1 = 0
Once they got to one they began again with 10 counters.
On Tuesday we did an investigation. You may like to try it at home.
On Wednesday we used our subtraction knowledge to solve problems.
then moved on to numbers. Then we challenged ourselves to more open ended questions
On Friday we recorded the subtraction number calculations that matched pictures. Here are some examples. Some of us challenged ourselves to also write the related addition calculations. Could could give your child a group of objects and ask them to break into to parts. Using these whole, part, parts they could write two subtraction and two addition calculations.
This week in
science we used our knowledge of materials and their properties. We played a
game that you may like to play at home.
In pairs you have
one piece of paper. The first person
thinks of a toy and writes it down. Fold the paper so the 2nd person
can’t see the toy.The 2nd person writes down a material that the toys could be made of such as wood, plastic, metal, glass, rock or fabric.
The pair then reveal the two answers eg
