Friday 11th January

Welcome back and we hope that you have had an enjoyable and restful break. It was lovely to see the children fresh and ready to learn.

This week in English we have been reading poems by Tony Mitton. On Monday we read a poem called Dazzling Diggers.

We talked about our favourite words and noticed that Tony Mitton had used alliteration and rhyme.  Ask your child what their favourite word or phrase was and can they tell you which words use alliteration and which words rhyme. We then repeated the activity in our colour groups with other poems by Tony Mitton about vehicles.
On Tuesday using the same poems as the day before we worked in threes to learn our poem and then performed them to each other.
We had to remember to
·         say the words together
·         keep to the rhythm
·         invent actions to go with poem
·         say it loud enough so when you perform it to everyone they can hear the words
·         work as a team

On Friday we wrote our own sentences to match pictures of vehicle.   We had to choose our very best words just like a real poet.  Next week we will be writing our own vehicle poems.
Over the weekend you may like to help your child think of their best two words to describe the vehicles below saying what the vehicle is like and how it moves.

We have been using the Tony Mitton vehicle books this week you may like to go to the library and see if you could borrow one or use the link to read
Or ‘Roaring Rockets   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcPGkajRDN4

In phonics this week we have been learning about the digraphs ‘oo’ and ‘ue’.
Can your child show you how they use their phoneme fingers to segment the word ‘rescue’ and then blend it back together again?
Can they do the same with the word 'baboon'and 'kangaroo'.
Can they spot  the digraph in the words above.  Is there only one digraph in these words or do they have more than one?
Can they read these alien word quoop,  bloot,  strue,  drues.

This week in maths we have been adding within 20. We thought about different strategies we could use when working out how many ‘more’ we need from a given number.  For example, we could use our number facts, look at our fingers, count on using our fingers, use a tens frame, use Numicon or a number line. We then wrote sentences, filling in the blanks to make 10.

We then though about how we can use our knowledge of making 10 to make numbers to 20. For example, if I have 8 and need 15, know I need 2 more to make 10, and then ‘bridging 10’ I need 5 more to make 15. So I need 2 + 5 more = 7 more.

The next day we practised adding by counting on and bridging through 10. For example, if I am adding 8 + 7 I can first add 2 from the 7 to ‘bridge’ through 10, and as 7 is 2 + 5 I then need to add 5 more. So 8 + 7 = 8 + 2 + 5 = 15. This is probably easier to show on a number line!

On Friday we use our addition skills to solve missing number problems. We decided on our own strategy to calculate the missing number and made sure we used careful counting! Here are some examples of the problems we solved:

In D&T this term we are learning about vehicles.  This week we began by thinking about the purposes of different vehicles.  We looked at pictures and toy vehicle and had to say what we thought they were designed to do.  Ask your child what features an ice cream van has to make it fit for its purpose.

We also learnt about the different parts of a vehicle.  We learnt to identify the wheels, the chassis, the axles, the body and the cab and as a group we labelled a lorry.

In history this half term we will be investigating how transport has changed over time. We have started by thinking about how we travel now and how that would have been different in the past. We thought the first cars looked very cold and uncomfortable! Here are some pictures of different transport that we put into a time line. You could ask your child to put them in chronological order and to compare them.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend and we are looking forward to our trip to Stockwood Park Discovery Centre next Friday. Please return any consent forms as soon as you can.
