Friday 18th January

We have had a wonderful, if chilly, day at Stockwood Park Discovery Centre today. We have enjoyed looking at all the old carriages and historical artefacts. We gained an insight into how wheels, axles and chassis  fit on carriages, and we have seen how transport and daily living has changed over time. Thank you to the parents who accompanied us, we hope you enjoyed yourselves too! Have a great weekend.  The Year One Team.  Next  week we will be starting to make our own vehicles. Please could you send in a cardboard box for your child, if you have not already done so. The box needs to be a suitable size and shape for your child's chosen vehicle and please turn inside out, in order for it to be painted. Thank you.  This week we have been continue to add numbers within 2o. We started the week with the number problem below: We had different numbers for our target and we could decide how to show our working out. Here are some examples: We have been using different manipulatives including Numicon and tens frames to help the children see that when we can use a number bond to 10 to make a number bond to 20.  The ones will stay the same but one number will also have one ten eg  8+2 could become 18+2 or 8 + 12, when a ten is added to one of the numbers. The children need to know their number bonds to 10 to be able make the connection that these can be used to find number bonds to 20.  Follow the link to Hit the Button making 10, once they are secure with this move on to making 20. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button We have also recorded all the number bonds of 20, using Numicon, beads strings or tens frame to help us. We decided how to use our resources in order to find all all the pairs.  This week in English we have continued learning about poetry.  We read  this poem. We talked about what we noticed.  Here are some of our ideas. The poem has ·         A title ·         Number words  One… Two… Three…. Four… Five ·         A vehicle ·         Describing word (adjective) ·         Doing word (verb) ·         Each new sentence starts on a new line We then used the pattern to make our own Vehicle poems in pairs.  We collected our ideas to create these two class poems. When writing our poem we had to remember the Year One  ‘Non Negotiables’ which are ·         Use finger spaces, capital letters and full stops ·         Use the word bank for spelling numbers ·         Use our phoneme fingers for spellings ·         Form letters correctly so others can read it ·         Re-read poem to check it makes sense The next day we wrote our own vehicle poems.  We could use one idea from the poem we wrote with our partners. The following day we talked to our teachers about our poems and made improvements to make them even better. You may like to play some of the following games at home.

   Corners game.  Each corner of the room is a different type of word doing words /describing  

   words/vehicles/numbers You say a word eg five and your child has to go to the correct corner. 

   Repeat with words like chugging, green, four, loud, zooming, shiny….

   Ping pong – take turns to say a vehicle eg hoovercraft, car, bus, rocket

   or take turns one say vehicle and other describes it eg rocket, shiny
  Tell me more –  One person is the storyteller and one person is the listener.  The storyteller says a
  vehicle and says two sentences about it.  The listener then chooses a word from the two sentences
  which they would like to hear more about.  They say tell me more about…..and name the word. 
  The storyteller then gives another sentence or two about the new word. After several goes swap
   roles.
  All these are great games to encourage your children to take turns and listen to what the other 
  person is saying.
