In Maths we have been continuing our learning about place value of numbers to 100. We started by ordering 2-digit numbers from smallest to biggest. We know we have to compare the tens digit first, and if that was the same we compared the ones digit. 

We then solved some problems in the context of comparing 
numbers. here are some examples: 

Then we thought about calculating one more and one fewer (or one less), than a given number. We used our knowledge of place value to help us, as we know we add one, or take one away, we use the ones in the ones column. We know that if there are 9 in the ones column when we add one more we exchange the ten ones, for one ten. So 29 + 1 = 20 + 9 + 1 = 30. We worked with a partner to pick 2-digit numbers and then calculate one more and one fewer.

Please continue counting up and down to 100 and beyond, from any number. Please also encourage your child to practise finding one more and one fewer of any 2-digit number. 

Next week will be learning about recognising and counting in coins. If you have some loose change at home please help your child learn the features of the different coins. Thank you. 

This week in English we continued learning about poetry.

On Monday we thought about words that can be used to describe the sound of water.  We sorted words that rhymed trickle ripple, gush flush and words that went together well eg pitter platter, drip drop…

On Tuesday we wrote our own versions of Tony Mitton’s ‘Voices of Water’ poem.  We used his pattern ….          The water in the _______ says_______.

We looked at our co-constructed toolkit showing the features we needed to include.  We then wrote four sentences.  Some of us challenged ourselves to use words that rhymed.

 On Wednesday we had a water poetry ChIL and could choose from a variety of activities.  Some of us chose to write another version of Voices of Water. During the ChIL we all got the opportuntity to work with our teachers to edit our work using the toolkit to make our poems even better. 

 On Friday we began the lesson looking at four pieces of handwriting and discussing how easy they were to read and why.  We then co-constructed our own toolkit for handwriting to help us remember what we need to focus on. 

After that we wrote our poems in our neatest handwriting for a display that you will be able to see on Open Evening in July. 

This weekend at home you may like to continue the rhyming activity.  Give your child a word eg splash can they think of a word that rhymes with splash?

Can they write a list of words that rhyme and bring them into school to share?

We have been learning about Special books and Sacred Texts.  We have talked about our own special books and today we have found out about 'The Torah'  - the Jewish scroll.

We made Torah's, we wrote Rules for Our Life on one side and decorated the other side. This was to replicate the cover that The Torah is kept in.

We hope that the weather improves next week, as we are looking forward to our rescheduled sports day! And hope for even better the following week, as will be enjoying a dip in the sea in Southend!If you are helping on the day, please remember to come to the trip meeting next Friday, 21st June, at 3pm in Kingfishers classroom.
