This
week in Maths has been all about money! In Year One children learn to recognise
and count coins, and compare their value. We started by sorting different coins
and looking at how they are the same and different. We also looked at the different denominations
of coins. Ask your child
if there is a 2 p coin, a 12p coin or a 30p coin! We considered how a 5p
coin is equal to five 1p coins and a 10p coin is equal to ten 1p coins. Some of
us worked out how to use different coins too. Ask your child if they can make
10p using different coins.
The
next day we used our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to help us count
groups of 2p, 5p and 10p coins. Some of us then also added different
denominations of coins together.
We used
our knowledge of the different denominations of coins and our skills in adding
to solve a problem! We could record our thinking in any way and use any
resources to help. This helps us solve problems think about different ways to
find a solution. Here is the problem:
Please encourage your child to look at
a selection of coins and tell you the denomination of each. Then ask them to
make a given value, or given them a few coins and ask then to calculate the
total.
This week in English we started the week by reading the story Pirate Girl by Cornelia Funke. You may like to share the story at home by following the link below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZLIiJu-gZw
After listening to the story
we all drew our own story maps. We had
to draw a simple picture that helped us remember each key moment. Please look
at the example below and ask your child to tell you the story.
The following day we worked with a partner using our
story map to help us ‘step’ the story. When we step we only use short phrases
as we are trying to learn the sequence of the story. Here is an example of
part of the stepping script:

On Wednesday we created a ‘mood map’ of the
story. We thought about how Captain Firebeard
felt at different times in the story.
After
we did the activity ‘Phone Home’ using our story maps. In pairs we pretended it
was the next day and we were telling another pirate what had happened. We had to remember to use question words to
ask questions and listen carefully to the answers. This turn taking is very
important when we are listening and speaking to each other.
At the end of the lesson we
thought about how Molly would have felt too. We noticed in the end the good
character (Molly) felt happy whereas the bad characters - Captain Firebeard
and his crew the ending wasn’t so happy as
they had to deal with the consequences for making the wrong choices.
Please try this mood mapping at home with stories you read with your
child as it helps them understand how characters are feeling and why they act
as they do.
On Friday we write our own
sentence about Captain Firebeard. We
could start the sentence Captain Firebeard felt …………when ……….. or Captain
Firebeard felt ………….. because ………
We had to remember the Year
One non negotiables.
At home your child could draw a picture of a pirate and write some sentences about the pirate. We would love to see what your child writes.
On
Monday we added the prefix un to adjectives.
Un = not eg not happy
Unhappy, unknown, unlucky,
unsafe, unwell, unkind, unable.
On
Tuesday we added the prefix un to verbs.
Un = the opposite of the word eg
lock/unlock
Unlock,
unpack, untie, undo,
unwrap.
