Another busy and active week in year one has seen us exploring a range of activities about our learning power puppets and discussing how each of their characteristics can be used to help us learn and work well with our friends. Children have been re-visiting their Kandinsky abstract art from last week and using the learnt techniques and ideas to produce their very own Kandinksy creation.
Fabio focus has been teaching us lots of ways to help us concentrate and keep on task including using our memories to recall which objects had been removed from a tray by the teacher and focusing on matching movements to instructions in our Fabio says game.
Happy healthy Handa helped us to think of ways to take care of our well being including eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting a good amount of sleep and activity.
With Percy perseverance we learnt to keep going even if we were finding things difficult and explored a range of methods we could use to help us achieve our goal such as using resources to help, asking others to work with us and trying lots of times without giving up. All of the year one children were able to share ideas about which power puppet they could use in a range of challenges and give examples of how this could help their learning.

This week we have had lots of fun in ChIL. The children have done a construction ChIL to support their fine motor skill development, a fingerstrong ChIL, an art ChIL and an English ChIL. Ask your child what they did in these ChILs and see if they would like to continue that activity at home.
In our English CHIL session we looked at a wide variety of ways that we can use words and ideas to create, record, express and share stories and exciting descriptive language.
The children collected objects from our outdoor areas and use descriptive vocabulary to describe their object without using its object name. Words such as brittle, curvy, crumbly, twisted and rigid were used to explain the materials substance, appearance and consistency. The children were encouraged to write postcards to their favourite book character to share with them events from their week. We had fun with our year one wordsearch looking for the hidden words in our grid and exploring their meanings and sounds. We used the puppets to create and act out our own stories focusing on a aspects such as voice inflection and character words to express the story themes. Woodpeckers and Kingfishers enjoyed searching out a range of natural objects and then writing their labels for our working wall. Books were shared and read in our outdoor library areas created for the CHIL session and writing of some key primary colour words was explored on our A3 sheets.
On Monday we had a science afternoon. We sent home two pieces of paper which explained the experiments we did in school. You might want to have a go at them at home over the weekend. Here is the information if you didn't see them in your child's book bags:
On Tuesday we were able to recap on our Kandinski knowledge with a circle time to share key facts and events about the artist life before creating our own versions of his work whilst listening to Mozart as this was Kandinski's favourite composer to hear while he painted.
We discussed the artistic elements of his creations including his use of shape, colour and form to create his distinctive abstract style.
The children used colour mixing techniques and a range of mark making ideas such as different brush sizes and finger painting to interpret his art in their own way. We shared an exciting discussion about the pictures we had created and gave constructive feedback about what we liked and what ways we could make each piece even better next time.
Next week in maths we are sorting objects, counting objects accurately forwards and backwards to 10 and reading, writing and recognising numbers and amounts to 10.
In English we are starting our new handwriting approach which we discussed at the curriculum meetings this week. We will also be writing labels and captions for things we see around the classroom and school.
At home you might like to ask your child to use post its to label things around the house.
Just a reminder that we have indoor PE on a Tuesday and outdoor PE on a Thursday. Please ensure your child has the correct kit in school for these sessions.
