On Monday the children had their first letterjoin lesson and learnt how to hold their pencils with control using the song baby shark to remind us of our pincer grip method. We explored some warm up activities to prepare our muscles for the strength and agility needed to write effectively and legibly.
Both classes were shown some practise patterns and then the children went outside using chalk, felt tips, crayons and pencils to practise the patterns themselves. Ask your child to show you which patterns they have worked on in school this week. You might like to have a look at the letterjoin section of the website in order to practise some at home.
During our Maths lessons this week we have been exploring the concept of counting, ordering numbers and sorting objects in a range of ways including by colour, shape, size, and type. The
children explored a variety of ways to group objects and patterns of counting to determine which methods were the most effective. We have used number apples to sequence our numbers correctly from 0-10 and have been using simple number bonds to find different ways to make and create ten.
The children had fun outside counting various objects carefully. The children needed to read the number on the label and find, count or leave (depending on the station they were at) that many objects in the tray or hoop.
At home you might like to practise careful counting to 20, forwards and backwards. The children have been learning about counting accurately by moving objects into a line, so they can be sure they have counted each object.
In English this week we have been learning about how labels and captions can be used to name objects and describe events. We started by walking around the school looking for labels
Next we found objects in our classroom and the outside area to label. At home you might like to ask your child to use post its to label things around the house and the garden. You may also like to ask your child to write caption for their label e.g. the mug is red.
In Art this week the children have been learning about Jackson Pollock's drip paintings. We discussed how the children though the paintings had been created and how they made us feel. Next we went outside and created group drip paintings. The children dripped, flicked and splatted the primary colours onto a large piece of paper to create their own group drip painting ... we are very sorry about how painty some of the children were when they came home on Tuesday!!
Next week the children will be mixing tints and shades to create their own, individual drip painting in the style of Jackson Pollock.
