Friday 22nd November

It was lovely to see so many of you at consultations. We hope you found it useful and informative and now have a greater understanding of your child's progress so far in Year One.

This week in maths we have been exploring addition and the relationships between the numbers 1-10. The children used number facts to order numbers and create their own number sentences using a series of given numerals such as 2 4 6. Children had to place the numbers in the correct order to make number sentences and fact families. Children used the the symbols for equals and addition.

On Friday we enjoyed a marvellous maths morning where we had to solve a series of mathematical challenges and use the numbers we found as a code to escape the forest. Once we had found the code we were able to enjoy a series of super challenges and mathematical games for the rest of the session.
Children worked in teams to share ideas and solved the clues together using their Tina teamwork and Fabio focus skills.

You might like to try some of these activities from our maths morning at home:

ICT this week saw us programming and moving our beebots to negotiate obstacles and find their way to the toy at the finish line. We explored algorithms and how to give directions and commands using the programming buttons and then how to plan out a route for our beebot to travel along. Children worked in teams of three and then evaluated the beebots route and how well it followed the instructions to test how well they thought they had programmed each robot.

In DT this week the children were given a design brief for a puppet. The design brief stated that their puppet must have a face, it must be suitable to give as a gift and it must be decorated by joining at least one other piece of fabric to the puppet.

The children then designed the puppet they wanted to make with a specific person in mind to give it as a gift.

Later in the week we practised threading a needle and a running stitch to join two pieces of fabric together. We were blown away by the children's skills! They were incredibly focused and worked very hard.
At home this weekend it would be a good idea to practise a running stitch to join two pieces of fabric together.
Here is a useful video if you are unsure how:

Thank you to the parents that came in to help with these sessions, it really made a huge difference having you there.
If you would like to sign up to help with our puppet making session on Wednesday next week, a signup genius was emailed in last week's newsletter.

This week we have sent home costume letters for your child's part in the Christmas play. Please make sure you check your child's book bag.

Have a lovely weekend,
The Year One Team.
