Friday 8th November

We hope you had a good and restful half term and enjoyed the break.
This week we have jumped straight back into our learning and have been exploring some exciting activities and ideas.

In English this week we have been looking at poetry. We have focused on firework poems and have been looking out for the poets using their senses to describe the fireworks.
Here are a few of the firework poems we have looked at in class. You might like to look at them at home and pick out your favourite words and phrases.

If you go to a fireworks display over the weekend you might like to ask your child to tune into their senses. How do they feel? What do the fireworks look like? What do the people watching the fireworks look like? How does it smell?

We have been watching some videos about fireworks and then using our language skills to describe them. The children created a word bank of descriptions to help think about language they might like to use when they write their own firework poem next week.

You might like you use these words from class to write a firework poem with your child at home:

Next week in English the children will be writing their own firework poem.

Maths this week has focused around the concept of geometry and shapes and we have been observing and comparing a range of 2D shapes.
On Tuesday we looked at a range of shapes and discussed their properties such as the number of sides, length of sides and the difference between straight sides and curved  sides.

We looked at pictures that were made up of shapes and identified the shapes within them, discussing their individual properties.

We also went on a shape walk in the outside area to identify different shapes we could see in real life, e.g the basketball hoop is a circle.
At the weekend you might like to go on your own shape walk to spot shapes in the real world. We have only covered 2D shapes this week and will be covering 3D shapes next week.

In Science this week we have started learning about materials. We have discussed the different properties of glass, metal, plastic and wood.
At home you might like to ask your child use this word bank to describe the materials in your house:

We have been comparing objects and then grouping them in a range of ways based on their properties and similarities and differences. During the week the children have been thinking of words to describe the objects and the materials they are made from.
The children went on a learning walk to see how many different materials we could find around the school and grounds and then made a mind map of all the things that they had found. We discussed the reasons that certain objects are made from certain materials depending on the purpose they were made from and began to consider the best materials to use for some items we use everyday.

Woodpeckers had an enjoyable archery session on Friday afternoon. Ask your child what they learnt about being accurate when shooting the arrow. You might like to ask if they will be taking part in our archery competition later this half term - it is the children's choice if they would like to participate or not.
Kingfishers' next archery session will be next Friday afternoon.

Some of the activities you might want to try at home this week include:

Going on a shape walk and writing down what objects you see and what shape they are.

Exploring materials at home and trying to put them into groups based on their properties such as soft or hard, rough or smooth etc..

Taking photographs of fireworks and then writing some descriptive words around them to describe areas such as colour, pattern, sound etc.

Writing or reading some poems about fireworks and the acting them out.

Many thanks
The year one team.
