Hello everyone!
It was lovely to welcome the children back into school after
half term this week. We hope you all had restful weeks, the children certainly
seem like they have had a good, well needed rest.
This week in English we have been reading The Lighthouse
Keeper's lunch. In the story, Mr and Mrs Grinling use a wire strung between
their house on the cliffs and Mr Grinlings lighthouse in order to deliver Mr
Grinling's lunch in a picnic basket. Unfortunately, they encountered a problem
as the seagulls kept stealing Mr Grinling's lunch! The children came up with ideas to solve Mr
Grinling's problem, they drew a picture then wrote an explanation about what Mr
and Mrs Grinling could do. Ask your child how they suggested to solve the
problem.
Later in the week the children wrote questions for the
seagulls and Mr Grinling. When they had written questions they were happy with
the children took turns to be each character and answer each other's questions
in role. You might like to ask your child what questions they asked each
character.
Finally, the children wrote a letter to the seagulls,
explaining why stealing Mr Grinling's lunch was not a good idea. We challenged
the children to use lots of interesting adjective to describe how Mr Grinling
was feeling. Ask your child if they can remember any of the adjectives on the
list we created as a class.

In maths this week we have been learning about position and
direction. Our key vocabulary has been:
Left
Right
Forwards
Backwards
One half turn
One quarter turn
Three quarter turn
Full turn
Clockwise
Anticlockwise
Ask your child if they can demonstrate any of the vocabulary
to you.
The children have been giving each other directions to move
around the playground and the classroom.
They have also described what movement an object has made
e.g. The triangle started here, it did a one quarter turn to the right. This is
what it looked like now.
At home you might like to practise giving each other
directions using the vocabulary above.
On Friday we had a brilliant seaside workshop day. The
children made various seaside themed items which they brought home in paper
bags on Friday afternoon. In the afternoon, the children had a go at running
stalls at the seaside. Each class had a turn to run stalls or be seaside
visitors. The visitors were given a purse with pennies in it, so they were able
to pay for souvenirs, visit a fortune teller, watch a Punch and Judy show, sit
in deckchairs on the sand, eat at a café, have fish and chips, play hook a duck
and play the wheel of fortune.
It really was an excellent day and we hope the children
enjoyed it as much as we did!
Next week we have a Colts football coach coming in on Monday
afternoon. They will be running a girls’ football session with the Year One
girls during PE. The aim of the session is to encourage the girls to have a go
at football and inspire a love for the game.
