ENGLISH This week the children were introduced to the character Traction Man. On Monday they listened to the story ‘Traction Man is Here’ by Mini Grey. We spoke about whether the children thought Traction Man was a superhero. In pairs children talked about other superheroes they know and why they are heroes. The children then wrote a character description about Traction Man and described his appearance and personality. Then on Tuesday we explored a setting from the story, ‘The Sink’. We used a washing up bowl filled with water, bubbles cooked pasta, string, a spoon and a tea bag! Children came and felt the different things in the water. Then they used a range of adjectives to describe what they could feel such as soggy pasta, squishy tea bag. After that, the children wrote a setting description. On
Wednesday the children explored events and characters through role-play and
then wrote fantastic speech bubbles for the characters. Today the children acted out different scenes from the story and described their favourite part and gave reasons why. At home you could read a different story and act it out as a family or your child could tell you the Traction Man story. MATHS In Maths this week we were looking at place value of a number to 100. The children played a range of exciting games including snakes and ladders where they had to describe the number they landed on in tens and ones and say if it was odd or even. If they went down the snake they had to use the dienes to build the number. We had great fun playing bingo where the children had to select 4 numbers between 0 and 100 and write these on their
whiteboard. The teacher chose a number and described it by saying it had x tens
and y ones. Then the children would
cross that number out if they had it. Once someone has crossed off all 4
numbers they shouted bingo! After that the children worked with a partner to roll a dice twice, get a 2 digit number and represent that number in as many different ways as possible in their book. You could do this activity at home and try and represent the numbers in different ways. We also played a game called Lions
and Tigers where the class were split into two groups took turns to roll a dice
to make 2 digit numbers. Once you roll the dice you have to decide if it goes into the tens column or the ones column. The higher the number the more points you got. Have a go at playing this at home. RE In RE the children made a Dreidel and played with it. SCIENCE The children were very excited to
have Professor Tash deliver an exciting workshop. She showed the children two experiments about
water pressure. She also taught them about different food chains in for sea
creatures in the ocean. The children had so much fun filling up a bottle with
water, putting in a diver and squeezing the bottle to try and make the diver
sink. They also used larger bottles to make a fountain by loosening the bottle
top and pull off two tabs that had been stuck on. The tabs were covering holes
and then water spurted from the bottles. So the idea was that tabs and the
holes were facing away from the children so that they didn’t get covered in
water. Well, that was the plan!!!!!! WOODLAND LEARNING This week the children were
learning about the longest day and why Stonehenge was special. They found out
that the stones came from Wales and then they built their own from clay.
