We have had a lovely week in school this week. The children have enjoyed the sunshine and we have done lots of learning outside.
In maths we have been learning about the place value of numbers to 100. The children have had lots of opportunities to play games and build numbers using different practical resources such as numicon, diennes, bead strings and counters. The children have also been practising writing numbers in jottings so | = 10 and . = one (e.g. |||..... = 35)
Ask your child to partition these numbers into tens and ones, if they would like an additional challenge they can partition them in a different way e.g. 34 = 30 + 4, 29 + 5, 28 + 6 etc.

Next week in maths we will continue to learn about the place value of numbers to 100.
On Tuesday we had a very exciting visitor. Paul Lyalls, the poet came into our class to do a workshop with the children. He talked about the importance of using your imagination. We talked about poetry, and what makes a poem a poem. The children realised that poetry can be anything, it doesn't need to rhyme, it can be serious, funny, silly or beautiful.
Paul worked with the children to create a silly poem called 'What If...'
The children came up with impossible ideas where they needed to use their imagination, the rules were:
You can 'what if' anything, but after a topic has been said once, it can't be repeated e.g.
"What if tables had mouths?" then we can't use tables or mouths again.
Have a look at what we came up with in class, maybe you'd like to have a go at writing a 'What If...?' poem at home?
This week in English we have been reading
poems about water.
We started the week by looking at a selection of poems written by Shirley Hughes. We worked in groups, reading our poem and then talking about our favourite words or phrases in the poems. We thought about our reasons of why we made those choices.
On Friday we read the poem below Splish! Splash! Splosh!
We talked about what words we liked in the
poem. Then worked in groups of three to learn the poem. We made our own actions to help us remember
the words. After some practise we
performed the poem to the class.
