This
week in English we have been continuing our learning about space. We have been
using the ipads and books for our research and we even had a quiz to test our

Next
week we will be learning about space travel and the moon landings. During the
weekend your child could continue their research using DKfindout website to
find out about this.
We
have also been recording our learning for our space display. Today we have been
writing facts about space, remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces,
full stops and phoneme fingers to spell. We have also been working hard to try
and hold our pencils correctly. Please ask your child to show you how this is
done!
This week in maths we have adding by counting on. On Tuesday we started by looking at the
number 8 +3. We used a number-line to
count on from 8. We also talked about
putting 8 in our head and counting on 3 more to find the total. The children remembered from last term that
you mustn’t count 8 in the count you’ve got to jump on.
We looked at this problem ‘Ravi is thinking of the number 11. Which number does he choose from the one
below to make fourteen, nineteen and twelve.
3, 10, 5, 2, 9, 6, 1, 8
On Wednesday we did an investigation. We had to find ALL the numbers that can be made by adding
the dots on two dice.
Some of us rolled the dice to generate the numbers but we couldn’t
use the same numbers twice. Some of us
tried to work like real mathematicians and worked systematically and were able
to find all 36 possibilities.
The children were ask to find the highest and lowest totals that
could be made.
On Friday we continued to add by counting on. We could use different manipulatives to help
us work out a range of addition questions including
6+2, 11+3, 7+6, 18+8

A one digit number is added to a two digit number. The answer is
16. What could the missing numbers be?
In
phonics this week we have been learning the digraph oo and ue. We noticed the ‘oo’
digraph is generally in the middle of words such as spoon, moon. But kangaroo
breaks the rule. Whereas the ‘ue’ digraph is at the end of words eg continue,
blue, statue, rescue.
In D&T over the next few weeks we are going to be making our own moving space picture. This week we looked at a range of pop up books to get ideas. Watch this space to see what happens next.
In science today Professor Penny Planet came to school and set us a challenge. We had to land a rocket safe;y on the launch pad. Ask your child what the best way to land the rocket was and why not have a try to land your own rockets!
