Year 1 Blog week 1.

Welcome to the year 1 blog. We are very happy to have welcomed in our new classes and see them settle into the year 1 routine so quickly this week.

We have had a busy week with lots of activities and exciting games which have been enjoyed by pupils and teachers alike.

On Monday we spent some time getting to know each other and sharing ideas about the things we are looking forward to about year 1.

We played some dice movement and action games to develop our listening and concentration skills and drew pictures about the things we thought we wanted to learn this year.

In the afternoon we enjoyed our first year 1 PE lesson with Miss Kelly. We also explored mixing primary colours in our art lesson.

On Tuesday we looked at the Crabtree rules, talked about how to get the most out of our learning in the classroom and how to be safe at school. We made a mind map about what qualities make a good learner and talked about how to work well as a team.

In the afternoon, we took part in our “Lego” Challenge working in teams to make a model and using communication to share information about how it should look and how it should be built. 

We finished our day with a music ChIL (child initiated learning) session where we explored a range of musical instruments and clapped our names to hear the different beats in each.

On Wednesday we enjoyed Super-movers and had our first Jigsaw lesson, where we talked about team work and what makes each of us special. We welcomed our Jigsaw characters into the classroom and shared ideas of how we could help them to settle in and feel safe.

In the afternoon we explored some writing and reading activities in our English CHIL, including building a story using Lego pieces to create characters and objects.

On Thursday we had our second PE lesson with Mr Sinclair. One half of the class had their first Woodland Learning session and had a lovely time experiencing the outdoor area. The other half of the class will alternate and do Woodland Learning next week. 

Our last day of the first week saw us going on a listening walk around the school grounds to listen to, and mind map the sounds we could hear. We had a circle time about saying positive things to each other and speaking kindly. We then drew a picture of something that makes us happy.

In the afternoon we had a re-cap session to remember our school rules and reflect on all of the things we had done over the week. Ask your child if they can tell you all five of our Crabtree Rules.

We then enjoyed an outdoor CHIL session enjoying using the outdoor learning areas to explore our activity stations, before going home for a well-earned rest.

Well done to all of our Year 1 pupils for such a positive start to the term.

Friday 17th July

Hello! A few parents asked if we would be able to take photos with our bubbles this week to remember this strange time that we have been having, so here they are!

We also wanted to say the biggest thank you to everyone for their kind words, cards and gifts. Your support throughout this year (particularly the last few months) has meant the world to us. It has been so lovely to read your emails in the Year One email account, thank you so much for each thoughtful message. It has been an absolute joy to work with your children this year, watching them progress, grow and show so much resilience in such a strange time has made us feel very proud indeed.

We wish you a fun and relaxing Summer and we cannot wait to see what the children achieve in Year Two!

Friday 20th March

This week in English we have been writing a recount of our trip to Batford Springs. The children have been focusing on using time openers to ensure their recount is written in chronological order.

We started the week by ordering photos of the trip and verbally recounting what we did while we were there.
After that we played pass the parcel, inside the envelope there was lots of different time openers:

On Tuesday
When
Then
Later
Finally
Eventually
Soon

The children needed to identify what type of words they were and where you would find them in sentence.

Next the children worked as a class to shared write a recount of their trip to Batford Springs. Have a look at the children's shared writing:

Finally on Friday the children wrote their own recount of their trip to Batford Springs. They focused on using time openers and joining words (and, but, because, so, if) to extend their sentences and add more detail.
If your child has not been at school this week you might like to try some of these activities at home. 


On Wednesday we had a visit from Mrs Spink from Mini Professors. She held a session about polar habitats and the types of animals that live in the Arctic and Antarctica. The children built a polar region habitat as a group using a plastic tub, water, ice and polar animal toys. This might be an activity you'd like to try at home.

 She also discussed food chains with the children and different food chains in polar regions.

In Science we have been classifying and grouping plants. The children then drew and labelled the parts of a part using these words:
Roots
Stem
Petal
Leaves

We discussed what each of these parts does, ask your child the function of each part mentioned above.


In Maths we have been looking at more than and less than and then counting in two's and ten's.
We have been using a range of resources to build, model, and solve a range of additions and have been discussing the key Mathematical language used to reason the patterns and processes we have observed taking place as we have been adding our numbers together. The children have been working in groups to share ideas and have then been evidencing the learning in their books using number tracks to show the patterns of counting up in 2'

Home Learning Zone:

Jigsaw, the scheme we follow for PSHE are offering some of their Families Programme materials for free. You can download and share the stories (audio files) and the Calm Me times (audio files) from two of the sessions. These stories align with the Jigsaw PSHE Dreams and Goals and Healthy Me Puzzles and are suitable for children aged 5+.
