Friday 18th January

We have had a wonderful, if chilly, day at Stockwood Park Discovery Centre today. We have enjoyed looking at all the old carriages and historical artefacts. We gained an insight into how wheels, axles and chassis  fit on carriages, and we have seen how transport and daily living has changed over time. Thank you to the parents who accompanied us, we hope you enjoyed yourselves too! Have a great weekend.  The Year One Team.

Next  week we will be starting to make our own vehicles. Please could you send in a cardboard box for your child, if you have not already done so. The box needs to be a suitable size and shape for your child's chosen vehicle and please turn inside out, in order for it to be painted. Thank you.

This week we have been continue to add numbers within 2o. We started the week with the number problem below:

We had different numbers for our target and we could decide how to show our working out. Here are some examples:

We have been using different manipulatives including Numicon and tens frames to help the children see that when we can use a number bond to 10 to make a number bond to 20.  The ones will stay the same but one number will also have one ten eg  8+2 could become 18+2 or 8 + 12, when a ten is added to one of the numbers.

The children need to know their number bonds to 10 to be able make the connection that these can be used to find number bonds to 20.  Follow the link to Hit the Button making 10, once they are secure with this move on to making 20.

We have also recorded all the number bonds of 20, using Numicon, beads strings or tens frame to help us. We decided how to use our resources in order to find all all the pairs.

This week in English we have continued learning about poetry.  We read  this poem.
We talked about what we noticed.  Here are some of our ideas.

The poem has

·         A title

·         Number words  One… Two… Three…. Four… Five

·         A vehicle

·         Describing word (adjective)

·         Doing word (verb)

·         Each new sentence starts on a new line

We then used the pattern to make our own Vehicle poems in pairs.  We collected our ideas to create these two class poems.

When writing our poem we had to remember the Year One  ‘Non Negotiables’ which are

·         Use finger spaces, capital letters and full stops

·         Use the word bank for spelling numbers

·         Use our phoneme fingers for spellings

·         Form letters correctly so others can read it

·         Re-read poem to check it makes sense

The next day we wrote our own vehicle poems.  We could use one idea from the poem we wrote with our partners.

The following day we talked to our teachers about our poems and made improvements to make them even better.

You may like to play some of the following games at home.

Corners game.  Each corner of the room is a different type of word doing words /describing
words/vehicles/numbers You say a word eg five and your child has to go to the correct corner.
Repeat with words like chugging, green, four, loud, zooming, shiny….
Ping pong – take turns to say a vehicle eg hoovercraft, car, bus, rocket
or take turns one say vehicle and other describes it eg rocket, shiny
Tell me more –  One person is the storyteller and one person is the listener.  The storyteller says a
vehicle and says two sentences about it.  The listener then chooses a word from the two sentences
which they would like to hear more about.  They say tell me more about…..and name the word.
The storyteller then gives another sentence or two about the new word. After several goes swap
   roles.
All these are great games to encourage your children to take turns and listen to what the other
  person is saying.

Friday 11th January

Welcome back and we hope that you have had an enjoyable and restful break. It was lovely to see the children fresh and ready to learn.

This week in English we have been reading poems by Tony Mitton. On Monday we read a poem called Dazzling Diggers.

We talked about our favourite words and noticed that Tony Mitton had used alliteration and rhyme.  Ask your child what their favourite word or phrase was and can they tell you which words use alliteration and which words rhyme. We then repeated the activity in our colour groups with other poems by Tony Mitton about vehicles.
On Tuesday using the same poems as the day before we worked in threes to learn our poem and then performed them to each other.
We had to remember to
·         say the words together
·         keep to the rhythm
·         invent actions to go with poem
·         say it loud enough so when you perform it to everyone they can hear the words
·         work as a team

On Friday we wrote our own sentences to match pictures of vehicle.   We had to choose our very best words just like a real poet.  Next week we will be writing our own vehicle poems.
Over the weekend you may like to help your child think of their best two words to describe the vehicles below saying what the vehicle is like and how it moves.

We have been using the Tony Mitton vehicle books this week you may like to go to the library and see if you could borrow one or use the link to read
Or ‘Roaring Rockets’   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcPGkajRDN4

In phonics this week we have been learning about the digraphs ‘oo’ and ‘ue’.
Can your child show you how they use their phoneme fingers to segment the word ‘rescue’ and then blend it back together again?
Can they do the same with the word 'baboon'and 'kangaroo'.
Can they spot  the digraph in the words above.  Is there only one digraph in these words or do they have more than one?
Can they read these alien word quoop,  bloot,  strue,  drues.

This week in maths we have been adding within 20. We thought about different strategies we could use when working out how many ‘more’ we need from a given number.  For example, we could use our number facts, look at our fingers, count on using our fingers, use a tens frame, use Numicon or a number line. We then wrote sentences, filling in the blanks to make 10.

We then though about how we can use our knowledge of making 10 to make numbers to 20. For example, if I have 8 and need 15, know I need 2 more to make 10, and then ‘bridging 10’ I need 5 more to make 15. So I need 2 + 5 more = 7 more.

The next day we practised adding by counting on and bridging through 10. For example, if I am adding 8 + 7 I can first add 2 from the 7 to ‘bridge’ through 10, and as 7 is 2 + 5 I then need to add 5 more. So 8 + 7 = 8 + 2 + 5 = 15. This is probably easier to show on a number line!

On Friday we use our addition skills to solve missing number problems. We decided on our own strategy to calculate the missing number and made sure we used careful counting! Here are some examples of the problems we solved:

In D&T this term we are learning about vehicles.  This week we began by thinking about the purposes of different vehicles.  We looked at pictures and toy vehicle and had to say what we thought they were designed to do.  Ask your child what features an ice cream van has to make it fit for its purpose.

We also learnt about the different parts of a vehicle.  We learnt to identify the wheels, the chassis, the axles, the body and the cab and as a group we labelled a lorry.

In history this half term we will be investigating how transport has changed over time. We have started by thinking about how we travel now and how that would have been different in the past. We thought the first cars looked very cold and uncomfortable! Here are some pictures of different transport that we put into a time line. You could ask your child to put them in chronological order and to compare them.

We hope that you have a lovely weekend and we are looking forward to our trip to Stockwood Park Discovery Centre next Friday. Please return any consent forms as soon as you can.
